Thematic routes and long-distance trails have been an important feature of individual destinations or partnerships of destinations for many years. They are a way to extend the benefits of tourism over wider areas, including to remote and rural communities.

The Covid-19 crisis, combined with growing concerns about overtourism, have made clear the interest and value of good quality walking and cycling trails, but also of driving routes and routes of cultural discovery.
